A virtual firearm training facility where participants of all skill levels can train with real firearms plans to open Aug. 8 at 13201 RM 620, Austin. Valor Defense Academy will house multiple 12-by-7-foot video screens that simulate various scenarios in which a person may need tactical self-defense knowledge. Participants use real firearms without ammunition that are rigged to replicate the same recoil a person would feel when firing a firearm with ammunition, owner Daisy Angel said. The facility is modeled after Artemis Defense Institute, a Southern California-based training center where Angel trained for several years before moving to Austin. The facility can be used to teach anything from basic shooting skills to advanced SWAT team tactics, Angel said. It will also teach de-escalation skills and educate participants in liability issues related to self-defense or law enforcement practices. Two instructors from the Austin Police Academy as well as the former director of training at Artemis Academy have been hired as instructors, Angel said. Valor Defense Academy will offer private lessons, group lessons and training opportunities for local law enforcement.
