Huston-Tillotson University, located at 900 Chicon St., Austin, celebrated it 143rd anniversary on Oct. 26.

Founded in 1875 as Tillotson College, the university is Austin’s oldest institute of higher learning and the city’s only historically black college and university.

It merged with Samuel Huston College in 1952.
