Leander ISD’s board of trustees is again considering calendar schedules—this time for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years.

The proposed calendars for both years include a start date in mid-August and an end date in late May.

The results of an LISD survey of 3,940 community members and 1,347 district staff members, the majority of respondents wanted the school year to end before June. Respondents also indicated favoring the “development of [the] next 2 years of academic calendars for planning purposes,” according to district documents.

The board of trustees is scheduled to adopt a 2019-20 calendar at its Jan. 24 meeting. If the current draft calendar is approved, the first day of school this year would be Aug. 15.

Although the state mandates schools must start after the fourth Monday in August, an earlier date is permitted in this case because LISD adopted the District of Innovation designation last year. The designation allows the district this exemption from the Texas Education Code.
