LTISD discourages distracted driving after officer hit at Rough Hollow Elementary

Lake Travis ISD officials are reminding drivers to stay off their cellphones near school campuses after a district police officer was struck by a vehicle.

What happened

A driver hit an LTISD police officer controlling traffic at Rough Hollow Elementary as parents dropped off their students on the morning of Jan. 11, according to a district letter sent out to parents and staff. The driver was distracted on their cellphone when the incident occurred and failed to stop, LTISD Chief of Police Andy Michael stated in the letter. The officer experienced minor injuries and is expected to fully recover.

The incident remains under investigation, and no charges had been filed as of publication time, said Marco Alvarado, LTISD executive director of communications and community relations.

The district’s letter reminded community members that using "cellphones while driving on school property and public streets during reduced speed time zones” violates state law. Community members with information on the incident are encouraged to contact Michael.
