The city of Houston and Harris County distributed nearly $30 million in funds from the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund on Nov. 15.
The $28.9 million in donated funds will be distributed to 90 local non-profits, including the
Lake Houston Area Relief Fund, which will receive $300,000 to provide financial aid and services to local flood victims.
“Bouncing back from disaster is hard work for flood victims trying to repair homes, pay for temporary housing, replace damaged personal belongings and start their lives over,” Harris County Judge Emmett said. “So, the administrators of the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund are working hard to meet their needs. It’s a process that is making a difference.”
Harris County and Houston collaborated to create the fund after Harvey devastated the Greater Houston area over late August and early September. Officials have collected more than $100 million and distributed more than $36 million already. A third round of funding will be dispersed by January.
The Lake Houston Area Relief Fund—a joint venture launched by Kingwood-based Insperity, the Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce and Humble Area Assistance Ministries—is funded through donations and fundraisers from companies, such as the Lake Houston Musical Arts Society, Chipotle, Chick-fil-a and the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.
With Insperity matching all donations up to $1 million, the Lake Houston Area Relief Fund could distribute about $2 million before it wraps up, said Corinn Price, director of community involvement for Insperity.
“It looks like we’re well on our way to reaching that $2 million mark,” Price said. “Our goal is to have all of the funds distributed by the end of December.”
