Keller announces positive West Nile virus case

Keller city officials on June 20 announced a positive case for West Nile virus.

Tarrant County Public Health notified city officials a mosquito sample from within the city limits has tested positive for West Nile virus, a news release states. It is the city’s first positive test this year, with the sample taken from a trap located at 8751 Davis Blvd.

The contractor's crews performed ground spraying June 20, and it continued June 21 near the collection site, the release states, with the spraying performed in accordance with mosquito abatement policies and county recommendations. The spraying efforts target roads within a half-mile of the trap, the release states.

City officials said the contractor uses water-based insecticides that offer low toxicity, low odor, rapid biodegradation and high mosquito mortality. The spraying activity was performed between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. on both nights, while mosquitoes are active and winds are slow.
