Early voting results in Fort Bend and Harris counties show voters deeply divided over the $99 million Katy ISD bond proposal but ultimately voting against it. Tallies from Waller County are still unreported.
Opponents of the proposal in Fort Bend County narrowly edged out supporters 1,436 votes (51 percent) to 1,396 votes (49 percent).
The early results are similar in Harris County's early voting count, with 1,745 residents (50.3 percent) voting against the bond and 1,725 residents (49.7 percent) voting for it.
The most contentious of the proposed projects included in the bond is the 14,000-seat, $69.5 million, second football stadium complex, meant to better accommodate the activities of the district's seven high schools. The money will also provide for the construction of a $25 million agriculture facility and a $4.5 million science, math and technology project center.
District officials have maintained all along that they do not expect an increase in the tax rate, often citing the most recent bond, approved in 2010, which was expected to raise the tax rate but ultimately did not. That bond proposal, at $459 million, passed narrowly by a margin of about 3 percent. The total Waller County turnout in the 2010 election was about 820 voters.
All election results are unofficial until canvassed.
