Candidates Lesley Briones and Ben Chou are vying for the Democratic nomination for Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner on the May 24 ballot, and early voting results from Harris County show Briones taking the lead in the race with early and absentee votes counted.

Briones received 54.84% of early and absentee votes, or 4,723 votes, and Chou received 45.16% of early and absentee votes, which equals 3,889 votes, according to unofficial results from the Harris County Election Administrators Office.

Chou and Briones face off in a primary runoff election after none of the seven candidates who filed for Precinct 4 commissioner in the Democratic primary received more than 50% of the vote in the March 1 primary election.

Community Impact Newspaper previously reported that Chou, a lawyer, would be the first Asian American and openly LGBTQ community member to serve on the Harris County Commissioners Court if elected. Briones has served as judge for the Harris County Civil Court at Law No. 4.

The winner of the runoff election will face Republican incumbent Jack Cagle on the general election ballot Nov. 8.

Although early voting results have been released, Harris County officials previously said Harris County residents may not receive overall election results from the May 24 primary runoff election until May 25 due to some election judges from the Harris County Republican Party having opted out of Harris County's election night drop-off program, Community Impact Newspaper previously reported.
