1. Various Veteran's Day events are happening locally this week.

  • Benefiting the Lone Survivor Foundation, the Texans United for Freedom Cooking 4 Courage BBQ Cook-Off  raises funds for therapeutic outdoor opportunities for American wounded service members and their families to optimize recovery. Sanctioned by the Lone Star BBQ Society, the event includes a flag retirement ceremony, a silent and live auction, as well as cooking competitions. The afternoon ends with a guest speaker and awards.   • To honor veterans, Magnolia ISD presents "Men of Magnolia" on Monday, Nov. 7. The concert features the Magnolia West High School Band and men's choirs from Magnolia Junior High, Bear Branch Junior High, Magnolia West High School and Magnolia High School.   • McDonald's restaurants in the Greater Houston area are offering veterans and active military members a free sandwich on Friday, Nov. 11. 2. Hwy. 249 in Montgomery County from Decker Prairie to the Montgomery-Harris County line will be closed nightly from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Friday, Nov. 11. Portions of FM 2920 and Business 249 in Tomball will also be closed nightly through the morning of Nov. 23.

3. Tickets go on sale Thursday, Nov. 10, for the new multi-day, Renaissance-themed music festival in Todd Mission. Middlelands will be held May 5-7 at the Texas Renaissance Festival grounds, located at 21778 FM 1774, Todd Mission.

4. Tomball City Council will meet at 6 p.m. Monday in City Hall. The council is expected to discuss the condition of the old City Hall building and approve a zoning request for a proposed grocery store and commercial development between Hwy. 249 and Business 249 near Alice Road.

5. The Greater Magnolia area will soon have a single chamber of commerce, which will begin operating Jan. 1. Members of the Magnolia Parkway and Greater Magnolia chambers of commerce voted in late October to merge the chambers.

6. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8. Tomball and Magnolia residents can cast their ballot from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. at their assigned voting location.
