Michell Bradie said she and her mother, Anna Bradie, were the first mother-daughter duo in the nation to attend law school together. Michell is a senior partner of Bradie, Bradie and Bradie, a family-owned law firm based in the Magnolia area.

“[Professors] watched us through our law school career because they were worried about whether or not it would damage the mother-daughter relationship. We were clueless [about making history],” Michell said. “Going through school with mom was wonderful.”

Michell said she is a third-generation attorney; her father, Peter Bradie, began practicing law in 1978 after an engineering career that took him around the world.

After graduating from South Texas College of Law in Houston in 1989, Michell said she worked for a downtown Houston law firm before joining her parents’ practice. In 1991, Bradie, Bradie and Bradie was founded.

“It was such a huge blessing because so many people complain that work takes them away from family, but mine brought me to my family,” Michell said. “My mom and I were tremendously close during law school, and this allowed me to become so close to my dad. ... He was a wonderful mentor and partner.”

Michell said she initially studied hotel management. Her mother had a background in philosophy.

Michell said she believes her mother chose to study law after observing Peter’s passion for his work. Attorney roots run deep in the Bradie family, which also prompted Michell to consider law school, she said. Both of Michell’s grandfathers were also attorneys, with Anna growing up observing the courtroom.

After Peter’s death in 2007 and Anna’s retirement, Michell said an overload of cases caused her to limit the firm’s scope to wills; estate planning, such as declaring power of attorney; and probate services, or transferring assets when someone dies. The firm serves Montgomery, Harris, Waller and Grimes counties.

“God’s given me a gift of being able to help people,” she said. “You’re an attorney and counselor at law. ... I keep thinking that we can change the profession one person at a time, where people will know that somebody is hearing them; they’re taking the time to listen to know what [clients] really ... are trying to accomplish.”
