Springtime is usually the busiest time of year for landscape material supplier RAC Materials, according to business owner Russell DeNina. This year, however, in addition to offering top soil, concrete and crushed rocks, the business is now providing free advertisement for local Tomball businesses and giving away free pet rocks to children.

DeNina said it was customary for local kindergarten teachers to come to the business, which has locations in Tomball and Pinehurst, every spring to collect rocks to bring back to their students and classrooms. This year, however, with schools closed as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, DeNina said he wanted to provide rocks for children and their families to decorate for free.

"[It's going] pretty good so far," DeNina said. "There's been a lot of people coming to get free rocks. People love stuff for free, and now they can come get a free rock."

Office Manager Lisa Hymel said this gives families the opportunity to get outside of their homes while still maintaining social distancing guidelines.

"It's great for them to go out, get the mulch, maybe some rocks to decorate and put in their yard." Hymel said.

RAC Materials is asking families to post photos of their newly decorated pet rocks on the business' Facebook page. According to Hymel, posts with the hashtag #RACRocks will be entered in a drawing for a $25 gift card.

RAC Materials is also providing free advertising for local businesses. Hymel said RAC Materials has put up signs on the backs of the company's dump trucks to be seen from passersby.

In addition to these added services in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, DeNina said RAC Materials offers a concrete dumpsite where people can dispose of concrete at no charge.
