Matthew Connelly, a transportation engineer from Texas Department of Transportation, shared an update on projects affecting The Woodlands that will go out to let—or to receive bids—in the coming years on roads including FM 1488 and Hwy. 242.

A project to add a raised median from Mostyn Drive to I-45 on FM 1488 will go out for bids this month, and other projects are scheduled through 2027. Here is a look at the four projects discussed. Cost estimates are provided on the TxDOT Project Tracker website.

Let date: April

Project: raised median

Length: 12.5 miles

Cost: $10.23 million

I-45 from Shenandoah Drive to Hwy. 242

Let date: late 2023

Project: drainage improvements, new northbound-eastbound direct connector, operational improvements

Length: 1.5 miles

Cost estimate: $1.32 million

FM 1488 from FM 2978 to I-45

Let date: September 2027

Project: widen from four to six lanes

Length: 6.7 miles

Hwy. 242 from FM 1488 to I-45

Let date: October

Project: widen from four to six lanes with raised median, construct sound walls, create shared used path

Length: 4.5 miles

Cost estimate: $38.58 million

The project for Hwy. 242 includes a proposal for sound walls to reduce noise pollution on a portion of the project as well as three tentative detention ponds that will be maintained by TxDOT.

It also includes a 10-foot-wide shared-use path on the east and north side of Hwy. 242, which includes a pedestrian and bike path.

The sound wall will be voted upon by residents who will be impacted, Connelly said.
