Edie Apiscopa, publicity chair of The Woodlands Garden Club, said the nonprofit founded in 1994 celebrated its 30th anniversary in December.

How it started

Apiscopa said The Woodlands Garden Club was founded by a group of women with a passion for gardening looking for a garden club to join. After forming their own club due to limited space in other local gardening clubs, The Woodlands Garden Club invited people interested in gardening to come to the first meeting on Sept. 13, 1994.

The club now meets at the Oklahoma Community Center at 27222 Hufsmith Conroe Road, Magnolia, once a month with arranged guest speakers.

About the program

With approximately 75 members, The Woodlands Garden Club focuses on community and hospice work while providing educational programs about gardening and agriculture, Apiscopa said.

In addition, The Woodlands Club awards grants to elementary schools in need of a garden with the mission of stimulating knowledge and love for gardening. The nonprofit's funding comes from membership fees and annual events including plant sales held at farmers markets.

The club also participates in The Woodlands Township events such as the annual Wildflower Festival and Arbor Day. Every month, the club collects supplies for Interfaith of The Woodlands, Montgomery County Women’s Shelter and the Montgomery County Animal Shelter.
