1. Angel Reach serves kinship families and youth aging out of the foster care system as well as young people ages 16-24 at risk for homelessness. The organization provides housing, counseling, transportation, employment coaching and educational advising.

2. CASA Child Advocates of Montgomery County supports children and families involved in the child welfare system. Volunteer advocates serve on planning committees or volunteer at fundraising or community education events by assisting with short-term projects and needs at the CASA office.

3. Children’s Books on Wheels provides educational and community resources to the Tamina community and surrounding residents. Volunteers are needed for diverse community service hours and for the organization’s tax assistance program, VITA. Services are provided in multiple languages.

4. The Champion Project accepts volunteers for its program to work with children living in residential treatment centers in Harris and Montgomery counties. Mentor volunteers complete a background check and have a one-year commitment to mentor youth twice a month.

6. The Montgomery County Women’s Center helps survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault by providing an emergency shelter, legal services, crisis intervention programs, a 24-hour hotline, case management and transitional housing.

Feed the Hungry

7. Keep US Fed Montgomery County has rescued and redistributed over 5 million pounds of surplus food at no cost to food-insecure neighbors since 2015, alleviating hunger and reducing food waste in the community. Volunteers rescue daily from food donor partners (like local grocers, restaurants, hotels, and caterers), load their vehicles and deliver to nonprofit recipient partners such as shelters, group homes, and food pantries in the community. Food runs are scheduled mornings and take approximately 60-90 minutes. Interested volunteers 18 and older (or 14 and older with an adult) can schedule to shadow a food rescue run by emailing the program coordinator at [email protected].

8. The Montgomery County Food Bank receives and distributes donated and surplus food to more than 53,000 people each month. Additional volunteer opportunities can be found on the organization’s online volunteer calendar. Children ages 7-15 can volunteer with an adult.

9. A nonprofit housing organization, Habitat for Humanity Montgomery County’s mission is to build safe and sustainable housing. Volunteers must be at least age 17 to help at the nonprofit’s resale shop, ReStore, and home repair volunteers must be at least age 18.

10. Inspiration Ranch, founded in 2006, offers therapeutic riding and equine-assisted mental health services at its 40-acre facility for people with physical, emotional and social disabilities. Volunteers can help with the riding program, farm chores, events and fundraising. Those interested in volunteering must be at least 15 years old. Horse experience is not required.

11. Interfaith of The Woodlands, a faith-based, nonprofit social service organization, has volunteer opportunities, including working in the food pantry, the resale store or the community donation garden; assisting with senior activities; and driving for the senior transportation program. Most programs are for volunteers age 16 and older. Bilingual volunteers are always needed. Additionally, the organization holds drives to collect food, books, clothing, housewares and furniture.

12. The Woodlands Township accepts volunteer support for special events throughout the year. Most events and races have a minimum age of 13, and for some the minimum age is 18. Parents or guardians of minors complete a waiver and release prior to their shift. Volunteers are briefed before the event on the requirements. Events and activities requiring volunteer support include storm drain marking, invasive species removal, races and holiday events.

Serve Seniors

13. Meals on Wheels Montgomery County provides meals to local homebound seniors as well as food for pets through the AniMeals program. Volunteers deliver meals, help in the kitchen and assist with various tasks. Volunteers under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent.

Help Animals

14. Henry’s Home Horse Sanctuary volunteers care for horses in an outdoor facility, performing farm work and other activities. Individuals with computer, marketing and fundraising skills are also needed. The all-volunteer organization’s primary mission is to serve veterans, first responders and their families.

15. Montgomery County Animal Shelter offers opportunities to assist with dog bathing and walking, cat handling, on- and off-site adoptions, fostering and laundry. Volunteers can also help with administrative tasks or serve as a vet staffer, a surgery assistant or a photographer’s assistant.

16. Operation Pets Alive is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization striving to elevate Montgomery County to a no-kill community through programs that raise community awareness, reduce the number of dogs and cats that enter shelters, and increase the number of pets that leave shelters alive. Volunteers are needed to help trap, neuter and return animals; serve on the foster team; and help coordinate events.

Support health and wellness

17. Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital welcomes volunteers to deliver care to patients, visitors and guests. Volunteers must meet certain onboarding requirements, be compliant with COVID-19 vaccines, receive an annual flu shot and be able to commit to volunteering at least one day per week for at least four hours. Houston Methodist also partners with area organizations to provide pet therapy, handmade crafts and comfort items.

18. St. Luke’s Health-The Woodlands Hospital welcomes volunteers Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. year-round opportunities are available for those 18 and over, and junior volunteer opportunities are available during the summer.
