The program, which launched in January 2024 and is funded largely through donations, offers complimentary services in the Cook Family facility at The Woodlands hospital. On any day, one room might have tai chi classes while another holds a sound bath program allowing patients to use singing bowls to create soothing sounds. Support groups and other community resources also contribute to the holistic programs offered at no charge to Houston Methodist patients, said Program Manager Marilyn Tennille.
Who it’s for
The program is open to any Houston Methodist patients at no charge, officials said. While most of those served are in The Woodlands, some Willowbrook patients also attend. The program is led by Tennille and Lindsey Bruchhaus, the director of guest relations and services for the hospital. In addition, about 10 volunteers help to work with programs each week as well as students through various educational partnerships.
“Sometimes we forget about the importance of community concerns,” Tennille said. “Our surgeon general says that loneliness is a public health crisis right now ... and that’s free to treat.”
The features
One focus area of the program is its teaching kitchen, where patients can learn how to cook healthy meals affordably. This can be helpful for those dealing with conditions such as diabetes or for seniors, Tennille said.
For physical care and strength, tai chi, yoga and other classes are available, while an onsite salon provides styling and wig services for patients undergoing chemotherapy or in need of services for other reasons.
Support groups relating to stroke, new parent, diabetes and other conditions are also held through HEAL, and spiritual care is available for individuals or families.
Programs within HEAL include:
- Oncology and medical hair loss: wig styling, skin care and cosmetic consultations
- Women's health and family wellness: prenatal and portpartum self-care and family wellness sessions
- Exercise, activity and strength: yoga, tai chi, meditation, strength and balance
- Health education: Live Well Health and Wellness Education series
- Spiritual wellness: bereavement support, spiritual assessments
- Wellness through creativity: art therapy, music, visual and auditory therapy, gardening
- Nutrition education: cooking sessions and nutrition learning
- Social support: mental health resources and support groups
Looking ahead
Funding is provided in part through the Houston Methodist Hospital Foundation, but the program also has ongoing needs for volunteer support and donations, officials said.
In 2025, classes and programs include new ones in strength, balance and mobility as well as a fall prevention class. A Morning Coffee group also provides social connection for anyone who wishes to attend.
"It's not specific to any one service line," Tennille said. "It's just a way to connect and make friends."
