Shenandoah City Council approved an agreement between the city and Texas Department of Transportation to install license plate recognition cameras in the city to help prevent car theft and other crimes.

What you need to know

Department Chief Troye Dunlap presented information about the proposal outlined in the meeting packet for July 24. Dunlop stated during the meeting the cameras would be put in four different areas in the city, but he did not mention specific locations for security reasons.

Dunlap told the board the cameras would be used to identify vehicles that have been stolen by identifying the license plates in a system used by police and the state.

“When people enter the city in stolen vehicles, they are typically here to commit other crimes, so we want to know they’re inside the city. I think it would be a huge benefit to prevention of crime,” Dunlap said.
