In a news release from the NWS, the arctic front will bring 40-44 hours of below freezing temperatures in the area starting Dec. 22. One of the biggest concerns is wind chill due to the high chance of strong wind gusts which will pose a hypothermia risk. According to the most recently updated data, the wind chill will create a "feels like" temperature of -1 in The Woodlands area on Friday night.
Conroe ISD is already closed for winter break, and at this time Montgomery County and The Woodlands Township offices will be closed Dec. 23-26 in observance of the Christmas holiday. The city of Oak Ridge North will be closed from Dec. 22-26. The city of Shenandoah will close at 3 p.m. on Dec. 22-26.
Despite office closures, residents are encouraged to contact emergency services in an emergency. According to the Montgomery County Precinct 3 Commissioner's Office, staff will be available "as needed" to respond to road closures and other issues.
According to Jason Millsaps, Montgomery County judge chief of staff, there is a plan in place for warming centers should the need arise as well as made arrangements for individuals with medical needs such as oxygen in the event of a widespread power outage.
A hard freeze and wind chill watch have been issued by the National Weather Service and will be upgraded to a warning by Dec. 21. Individuals are encouraged to stay indoors and take measures to protect themselves, pets, plants and pipes prior to the arctic front moving through the area.
