John Escoto said he looks forward to serving in the role of Shenandoah City Council member after winning the May 1 election for Position 3.

"I’m elated," he said election night. "I'll do whatever it takes to benefit Shenandoah and its residents."

Escoto said he felt the campaign leading to the election was a fair one.

"I want to thank my opponent, Jon Samuelson, for running also and for running a clean campaign," Escoto said. "I think he and I both share our views about how to keep Shenandoah a great city to live in."

Two newcomers faced off for one uncontested seat on the Shenandoah City Council on May 1, and John Escoto won with about 74% of the vote, according to unofficial results from Montgomery County. Escoto won with 227 votes or 73.94%, and Jon Samuelson received 80 votes, or 26.06% of the 307 total votes counted.

Escoto could not immediately be reached for comment on election night.

John Escoto took the lead in early voting in the race for Shenandoah City Council, Position 3, with 122 votes, or 77.22% of early votes on May 1. Jon Samuelson received 36 votes in early voting, or 22.78% of early votes.

The single contested race in the city on May 1 was for a seat previously held by Dean Gristy, who did not run for re-election.

Escoto is retired with 32 years of experience in law enforcement. He has served on the Shenandoah Planning and Zoning Commission. Samuelson is retired, with experience in finance and government accounting.
