Lovers of golf—and some of the game’s most renowned players—will return May 1-7 to The Woodlands for the Insperity Invitational at The Woodlands Country Club Tournament Course.

The tournament, which is the only invitational golf tournament included in the PGA Tour Championship, is expected to draw roughly 75,000 visitors throughout the week for a variety of events, ranging from pro-am rounds of golf to clinics for high school students.

Championship play begins May 5 and lasts through May 7, during which time professional players, such as Jack Nicklaus, Jesper Parnevik,Jeff Maggert, Gary Player, Ben Crenshaw, Tony Jacklin and Lee Trevino will play.

“We are one of the only places where the greats of golf play,” tournament Executive Director Bryan Naugle said.

Standards for getting into the Insperity Invitational are considerably different than other events—making it a true invitational—golfers must have won a tournament previously or be in the hall of fame, Naugle said.

Every event, including championship play, is open to the public to attend for free due to sponsorships, Naugle said.

“A few years ago, we came up with the idea that rather than print, market, sell and account for tickets, why don’t we sell individual gate days,” Naugle said. “HP does a gate day, [and] Woodforest National Bank … It allows people in the community to come out, and we don’t lose any money by doing it this way.”

The tournament also gives back approximately $750,000 annually to various local nonprofits in the Greater Houston area, including Interfaith of The Woodlands, which was also selected as the PGA Tour’s charity of the year. The nonprofit received an additional $30,000 earlier this spring, Naugle said.
