In response to severe storm events in April 2016, Oak Ridge North City Council unanimously approved a resolution authorizing an application to the Texas General Land Office for a Texas Community Development block grant to help the city begin flood mitigation efforts. During Monday night's meeting, the council authorized City Manager Vicky Rudy to be a representative in the application for the Spring Pines detention project, which is part of a disaster recovery program. The project was included in the $2.1 million Economic Development Corporation budget, which was approved in early September. About $300,000 was budgeted for the construction for the regional detention pond, which will be built in different phases to provide relief to the channel and additional storage for the drainage system, according to city officials. Oak Ridge North City Council members approved the purchase of a 1.3-acre lot at 129 Spring Pines Drive by the EDC to be used for the project earlier this year. A project timeline is not expected to be announced until the city receives a decision on its application.
