County takes control of animal shelter, looking for new management The Montgomery County Animal Shelter in Conroe has been taken over by the county after replacing its previous operator, Care Corporation.

The new management came as a result of a decision that was finalized Nov. 6. Commissioners Court had heard concerns about management and the condition of the animals at the shelter from volunteers and other stakeholders. The county had already rescinded its contract with Care Corporation during an Aug. 11 meeting.

With the new change in management, a $25 pet adoption special was held throughout November to reduce overcrowding at the shelter. Minda Harris, rescue coordinator at the shelter, said the animals are doing great and the shelter has been fixed and cleaned up.

“Approximately 500 dogs were adopted during the special,” she said. “As of right now the county is in control indefinitely, but it’s going really well.  All the animals are doing well and we’ve been working hard to eradicate disease.”

As part of the special, pets were also spayed, neutered and vaccinated. Harris said the shelter is going to continue a special during which all dogs and cats who have been at the shelter for more than 60 days will only cost $25 to adopt.

As of right now, members of the Montgomery County Commissioners Court are conducting a nationwide search for a new shelter director, Precinct 4 Commissioner Jim Clark said. Interim staff members are being hired on a contract basis to run the shelter until a new director is hired.

“We are down in the trenches trying to make sure that everything is getting done, and we care for the animals,” Clark said. “That is the major concern right now. There is no road map for this process, so we have to address things as it comes.”

Volunteer opportunities are available at the shelter ranging from dog walker and cat socializer to foster parent and adoption counselor. Donations can also be given, including items such as towels, pet food, pet carriers, shampoos and toys on the shelter’s wish list.
