Drivers can expect detours along Hwy. 59 in Sugar Land as the three-year project to extend the bridge over the Brazos River kicks off June 3.

In a nutshell

The road’s northbound main lanes from FM 762 to University Boulevard—about 6 miles—will close from Friday, June 7 at 9 p.m. to Monday, June 10 at 5 a.m. Drivers must exit to the frontage road at exit 105 and re-enter the Hwy. 59 main lanes before University Boulevard, according to a Texas Department of Transportation news release.

The details

TxDOT’s $53 million project will lengthen the Hwy. 59 bridge as well as both the northbound and southbound frontage road bridges 1,000 feet north over the Brazos River, Community Impact reported. It’ll also permanently remove the damaged turnaround, which was destroyed by erosion.

Zooming in

The detour is necessary to begin Phase 1, which will include extending the southbound main lanes and frontage road bridges. Traffic will shift to the northbound side, according to an earlier news release from TxDOT.

Next steps

The project is set to be completed in late 2027, TxDOT officials said.
