Sugar Land will rehabilitate 10 of its bridges this year identified by the Texas Department of Transportation as in need of improvement.

City Council authorized the execution of a $150,000 construction contract with Cedros Paving Service LLC. for bridge rehabilitation during its Nov. 1 meeting.

The Sugar Land Public Works Department maintains 117 bridges and box culverts throughout the city, according to agenda documents. TxDOT inspects all bridges throughout the state every two years to identify maintenance needs, and the city receives a condition rating for each bridge.

TxDOT’s most recent report identified 10 individual bridge structures in Sugar Land in need of some form of improvement to avoid additional deterioration. These improvements can range in scope from new signage, guardrails or delineation to bridge deck joint repairs.

The city identified the following bridges for rehabilitation this year:

  • Gillingham Boulevard

  • Kempner Street

  • Fluor Daniel Drive northbound

  • University Boulevard westbound

  • University Boulevard eastbound

  • Austin Parkway westbound

  • Austin Parkway eastbound

  • Williams Trace Boulevard northbound

  • Dulles Road

  • Green Fields Drive

Sugar Land awarded a five-year contract for bridge rehabilitation services to Cedros Paving Service LLC in FY 2020-21, which is now in its third year. The contract allows Sugar Land to develop an annual scope of work based on the available budget each fiscal year.

The city will draw funding for this project from the public works FY 2022-23 operations and maintenance budget.
