A contract for a project designed to reconstruct an aging street that serves both Missouri City City Hall and the Missouri City Branch Library has been approved for a fall start date.

Missouri City City Council voted unanimously during its July 18 meeting to approve the $2.1 million contract with Conrad Construction Co., according to a July 18 agenda report. The design for the project was completed in May, and the project was bid in June.

"Obviously this project is of much significance," said Shashi Kumar, director of public works and city engineer during the meeting. "This City Hall complex takes a lot of traffic. It also serves community center events as well as the Fort Bend library. We're very cognizant of it."

In addition to reconstructing Missouri City Drive with new striping and improved drainage, the city will also add an extension street, connecting Scanlin Road to Missouri City Drive to the north of Missouri City City Hall, according to project documents.

However, Missouri City will not be alone in paying for the project's total cost. According to agenda documents, the city is currently under an interlocal agreement with Fort Bend County first signed on Nov. 2, 2020, specifically for the reconstruction of Missouri City Drive.

Under the terms of the interlocal agreement, the county will pay 50% of the total project costs up to a maximum of $1.1 million. Missouri City, meanwhile, is responsible for the remainder of the project costs.

Construction is anticipated to begin the first week of September and is expected to span nine months with completion set for May 2023. The project will be built in phases, Kumar said, with the street extension slated to be constructed during the first phase.
