Sugar Land City Council unanimously approved a $1.65 million funding agreement with Fort Bend County to help fund a $3.26 million construction project on University Boulevard at its April 19 meeting.

According to agenda documents, the project will include adding an additional lane in both directions on University Boulevard, from north of Wentworth Avenue to New Territory Boulevard. The scope of the project also includes intersection improvements at New Territory Boulevard, Branford Place, Telfair/Wescott Avenue, Lexington Boulevard and Wentworth Avenue.

The $1.6 million will cover about half of the project, officials said. The remainder will be covered by the city of Sugar Land through its 2019 general obligation bond.

“This is a very congested intersection here,” Council Member Suzanne Whatley said. “I'm really excited about these much-needed mobility improvements here and I very much appreciate our partnership with Fort Bend County on this.”

According to a presentation given during the meeting, the project aims to increase traffic capacity along the roadway. The project is still currently in the design process.
