Sugar Land City Council approved a $4.92 million contract to begin drainage reconstruction in the Covington West and Imperial Woods subdivisions during a Nov. 21 meeting.

The details

The project will construct reinforced box and concrete culverts along several roads including:
  • Arcadia Drive
  • Oakwood Lane
  • Mason Road
  • Greenwood Drive
Roads will also be repaved along Oakwood Lane and Lynnwood Lane as part of a subproject to repair damaged concrete in the area, according to project details. Repaving will also occur to the main roads in the project once culverts are replaced.

Diving deeper

While a large portion of the funding for the project will come from the city’s capital improvement plan, additional funding was approved from the city’s leftover fiscal year 2023 capital improvement funds and 2019 bond funds.
  • $3.79 million from FY 2024 funds
  • $704,558 from 2019 bond funding
  • $674,394 from FY 2023 capital improvement funds
Senior Engineer Manager Timothy John said the funding included contingency funds and administrative costs.

Quote of note

“We've had in the past several HOA meetings," John said. "There are annual meetings to talk about the design layout. We do have a public engagement meeting coming up to talk about the project at the same time at the end of December to discuss construction. We've also been coordinating with Fort Bend ISD and giving them information and as we move forward we'll keep them informed as well."

What’s next

With the bid awarded, work is projected to begin in January, John said. While bid approval happened earlier than expected in the original timeline, the project itself will likely still take roughly a year to complete.
