Hundreds of nonprofit organizations serve Sugar Land, Missouri City and  greater Fort Bend County. This a noncomprehensive list of area organizations in need of volunteers for a variety of tasks. Here are some ways to get involved and give back to the community this holiday season.

AccessHealth has five locations throughout Fort Bend County offering comprehensive health care for the family. Weekday volunteer opportunities include assisting staff with clerical duties and making confirmation calls to patients. On the weekends, volunteers help with community events in Missouri City, Stafford and Richmond.

Big Brothers Big Sisters-Fort Bend County seeks volunteers to serve as mentors to help positively shape a child’s future by empowering them to achieve their goals. Mentors engage in any number of activities with their brother or sister.

Child Advocates of Fort Bend County assists neglected and abused children through specialized programs and community events. There are several volunteer opportunities that include helping with the Court Appointed Special Advocates program or volunteering at the Child Advocacy Center. Other opportunities, such as assisting with office administration and helping with the annual gala, are also available to prospective volunteers.

Citizens Volunteer Program, hosted by the city of Missouri City, allows residents to choose from a variety of volunteer-based projects. Available opportunities include assisting with the city’s crime watch program, the Citizens Response Team—which provides assistance in cases of emergencies—and environmental initiatives, such as helping plant trees and maintaining parks throughout the year. Additional opportunities include providing information to residents during hurricane season and other emergency situations.

The city of Sugar Land offers several programs for volunteers through its Serve Sugar Land organizations. Volunteer opportunities include serving on the citizen fire and police academies, community assistance support teams and the Sugar Land Airport Academy. The city also offers educational programs free of charge, such as Sugar Land 101—a 10-week course where participants learn the inner workings of city government.

East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry Inc. is a nonprofit, charitable organization that is composed of an interfaith alliance that serves the basic needs of residents in temporary financial crisis in east Fort Bend County. Volunteer opportunities are available through the nonprofit’s ministry, resale shop and food pantry. Individual volunteers must be high school age or older to volunteer at the ministry.

The Fort Bend Boys and Girls Club assists children in need with youth development services ranging from academic assistance to healthy living tips to parental resources. Volunteers 16 years old and older can sign up with the nonprofit organization to help tutor, mentor and coach students as well as help with special events and other administrative maintenance projects.

Fort Bend Cares is a nonprofit organization that serves the disadvantaged children and youth of Fort Bend County. Fort Bend Corps is actively looking for individuals and organizations to join volunteer teams for Hearts and Hammers. The program assists with exterior repairs to homes in Fort Bend County for the elderly, disabled and low-income homeowners who are physically or financially unable to make repairs themselves.

Fort Bend County Animal Services welcomes volunteers to assist with animal care. Volunteers can help with socializing, walking, bathing and grooming tasks. The organization has regular scheduled times for these activities, which volunteers can sign up for. It also hosts special events, like donation drives that offer additional volunteer opportunities.

The Fort Bend Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization within Fort Bend ISD that supports the school district through its grant programs and community events. Volunteers can apply to join the efforts of the Angels of Education Auxiliary—a group that helps create awareness of the community’s educational needs. Volunteers are needed year-round to help with events.

Fort Bend Family Promise mobilizes a network of local congregations to help families regain housing. Some of the areas where the nonprofit can use volunteer help are administrative support, children’s activities, maintenance and cleaning, and leading adult classes. The organization also has a need for congregation volunteers and provides opportunities for families to volunteer together.

Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity seeks volunteers who can donate their time and skills to build homes throughout the county for the less fortunate. Apart from homebuilding, volunteers can help at the office or in the organization’s ReStore. Volunteers can also serve on one of several committees to help with a variety of tasks.

The Literacy Council relies on its volunteers to work one-on-one with adults needing help in basic literacy. Missouri City Green, an affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful, is a nonprofit organization that brings residents together to sustain a vibrant community through its educational programs, beautification projects and recycling activities. Missouri City Green Missouri City Green[/caption] Rainbow of Love is a nonprofit organization that serves infants, toddlers and parents in need. The nonprofit is in need of volunteers for administrative support, answering phones, grant writing, soliciting donations, organizing the donation center, event assistance and help with parenting classes. All volunteers are required to have a background check that will be conducted by the organization. Volunteers who work with children are required to have a tuberculosis test.

Second Mile Mission Center is a faith-based nonprofit organization that provides food, counseling and health care to needy residents. The organization accepts volunteers age 16 and older at any time during its hours of operation. Volunteers help with putting food on the pantry shelves, hanging clothes on the racks, sorting donations and helping neighbors out to their cars to load items.

Texana Center welcomes potential volunteers to help with its many different programs and services. Volunteers can either work with adult clients who have intellectual and developmental disabilities or with children in the center’s autism programs.
