Simmons, who is a former Republican precinct chair, felt a desire to run for the position two years ago when attending the Texas Republican Convention in Harris County, Simmons said in a May 28 interview.

She said she wanted to run despite District 76 having a large Democratic-based demographic.

"My heart was beating as a minority woman to run not just for my [Hispanic] people but for every single person that's a minority out there that wants a chance to do something great in life," she said. "I felt my heart beating, telling me it was time for Lea to do this. So I kept on pursuing, persevering, and I never gave up on myself. The determination was key."

What's next

Simmons will face incumbent Democrat Suleman Lalani in the Nov. 5 election. All results are unofficial until canvassed.
