Students zoned for Lakeview Elementary School for the 2020-21 school year will attend Malala Elementary School while Lakeview is being rebuilt, Fort Bend ISD staff said at the Feb. 24 board of trustees meeting.
“I’m sure Malala will be excited to have [the Lakeview students], and I’m sure they’ll be excited to go there,” FBISD trustee Grayle James said. “That’s great.”
Lakeview is expected to be closed starting at the beginning of the 2020-21 school year. District staff said they expect the school to reopen midway through the 2021-22 school year.
During this time, Lakeview students, teachers and staff will learn and work out of Malala.
FBISD Chief Academic Officer Beth Martinez said this is a chance for Malala to return the favor of the hospitality they received while their school was being built.
Malala, the district’s 51st elementary school, opened this January when students returned from winter break.
However, due to a previously approved school boundary change, some students currently attending Lakeview will not go to Malala during the rebuild.
Students living in the Chelsea Harbour neighborhood as well as those in the multifamily housing located next to Chelsea Harbour and Stratford Park Estates will now be zoned to attend Oyster Creek Elementary school instead of Lakeview.
Fort Bend ISD staff said they are going to send reminder information out to parents, students and community members and will notify those affected by the change.
“It was timed intentionally in that way so when Lakeview moves out for the rebuild of the school, then, those students are able to go to their newly zoned campus,” Martinez said at the meeting.
