BREAKING: Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls not seeking third term

Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls will not seek a third term, according to a Facebook post from the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office at about 10 a.m. July 10.

Nehls has served as sheriff since 2012, the post states. Prior to winning the election to become sheriff, Nehls served as constable of Fort Bend County's Precinct 4. He has over 24 years of experience in law enforcement and began his career in Wisconsin, his home state.

According to the post, Sheriff Nehls has seen a 65% reduction in residential burglaries in his time as sheriff.

“We aim to make you feel safe and secure in your home and when traveling around Fort Bend County,” Nehls said in the post. “We are one of the safest counties in the greater Houston area, and I am very proud of that.”

Another passion project of Nehls' is the county jail's educational programs, according to the post. The county's inmate vocational center is funded without the use of taxpayer dollars through use of inmate commissary funds. Nehls also addresses mental illness, adding that suicide in Fort Bend Count is "on the rise."
