Phase 1 of renovations to the city of Missouri City’s community center wrapped up in January. City officials said interior work would conclude in time for the city’s Dad and Daughter Dance on Feb. 6.
The space is intended for use by businesses, schools, religious groups or families for different occasions and will also serve as a space for city events.
“All the ceiling tiles in the grid [have] been removed, and what they’re going to do is they’re going to be painting the entire structure so it’ll all be open,” said Jessica Kelly, project coordinator for the city’s Capital Improvement Program.
Design upgrades include a dyed concrete floor as well as pendant and track lighting. The front reception desk was turned into a glass-enclosed conference room while the number of glass storefront doors was reduced.
Exterior renovations will occur at a later date, said Cory Stottlemeyer, Missouri City media relations specialist. Those updates will include painting, landscaping, playground equipment and an adjacent sun-screened area, according to city documents.
The entire project budget is $504,310, according to the CAP. Architectural company Studio M6 is designing the project.
Workers found asbestos in the tile adhesive of the conference room’s tiles, removal of which took up more funding than expected, Missouri City utilities manager Robert Upton said.
Nevertheless, Stottlemeyer said additional funding was not required to proceed with the project.
