Laserzone was one of the first entertainment centers in Sugar Land when it opened in December 1998, while also being one of the largest dedicated laser tag facilities in the state, owner Gary Wilhide said.

Wilhide anticipated the growth the city of Sugar Land would experience, with Laserzone preceding the opening of the city's first movie theater and even Sugar Land Town Square. He said he wanted to create something for families in the then-undeveloped area.

“It was actually just two lanes each direction on Hwy. 6 in and out of there,” Wilhide said. “So that whole area was just then being developed. I wanted to put some entertainment into Sugar Land for kids and families.”

Wilhide built the 10,000-square-foot laser gaming venue and arcade himself. His background in engineering and previous experience owning a construction company equipped him for the task, he said.

“I just wanted to operate my own business. I had been running other people's businesses for years,” he said. “It was time to do things on my own.”

What to expect

Laserzone expanded its laser arena to 13,000 square feet in 2017, Wilhide said.

Its four levels support the 30 to 40 team games offered in the arena, Wilhide said. These include laser tag and a bank vault game where players weave through various lasers and try to successfully commit a fake heist as a clock counts down.

Laserzone also has concessions with candy, chips and beverages, Wilhide said.

Respecting the craft

Wilhide contributes the nearly 30 years of Laserzone’s business to consistency.

As the city has grown, so have its entertainment options. But Laserzone maintains its focus on laser tag, affordable pricing and providing customers the option to bring their own food for parties, Wilhide said.

“Bigger venues have come here in the last 10 years, but I've tried to be the biggest and the best in this business," Wilhide said. "We provide the best service, the best gaming, the best pricing."
