Bicycle retail and repair shop Sugar Cycles wants to get more area residents out riding. Owner Kyle Davenport leads rides from the shop for beginners and experienced riders during the week, and he said Sugar Land and Missouri City trails are a good place to start.
“We’re trying to do a little more social rides, too, where you do an easy, fun fitness ride, and then you end at a coffee shop or a bar or restaurant,” Davenport said. “The nice thing about Sugar Land [and] Missouri City is the trail system is super friendly to beginners, and it’s even fun to guys who ride expert to intermediate level because it’s so fast and flowy.”
Now in its 10th year in Missouri City, Sugar Cycles offers bicycles not just for professional cyclists, but for families and beginners as well.
“[We sell] everything from family, hybrids to kids bikes all the way up to [a] race bike,” Davenport said. “Our main focus is family, hybrids, comfort [and] fun bikes.”
Hybrid bicycles are for general use and have the versatility for every terrain from mountain biking to riding around town, he said. The store stocks about 200 bikes with a full-service repair shop to perform basic tuneups, bike building, frame repair, fitting and saddle sizing.
“There’s very few things pertaining to bicycle repair that we don’t do,” Store Manager Fred Rebollido said.
The shop carries Specialized brand bicycles and gear, including shoes, helmets, gloves, socks, bibs and jerseys.
Davenport opened the bike shop in 2006 with his father, Tony. He had always ridden bikes growing up and has about 20 years experience repairing them, but he entered the sport in adulthood.

“I absolutely loved it,” Davenport said. “The bike industry treated me so much better than advertising and the art field as far as job security and advancement and pay.”
The shop’s 10th anniversary is Oct. 1. When Davenport was looking into where he should establish his own store in 2006, he noticed a commonality about the customers he was repairing bikes for at a shop in Houston.
“I was noticing an insane amount of [77]459 zip codes,” Davenport said. “It was all Missouri City. It was all Sugar Land.”
He said he and his employees bring a lot of experience to what they do—some of his employees went to school to learn to build bikes and still continue their education.
The Missouri City bicycle shop also performs repairs.[/caption]“This industry always keeps me on my toes,” he said. “I don’t get bored with it. There’s always something to learn.”
Rebollido has also been working on bikes since 1987.
“We learn stuff every week still,” Rebollido said.
