Amidst growing coronavirus concerns, the Harris County Flood Control District has postponed all community engagement and public meetings for the month of March, including one regarding the Champions Stormwater Detention Basin previously scheduled for March 31.
"In an abundance of caution and in line with other City of Houston and Harris County agencies, the Harris County Flood Control District has postponed the public meeting originally scheduled for March 31 in connection with the Champions Stormwater Detention Basin project and Raveneaux property acquisition," HCFCD Project Communications Manager Karen Hastings said in an email. "All other Flood Control District community engagement and public meetings for the month of March 2020 also have been postponed."

Following its acquisition of Raveneaux Country Club in late January, the Harris County Flood Control District is now seeking input on the project, known as the Champions Stormwater Detention Basin.
The district launched a six-question online survey in late February to gather public feedback on the project, which has garnered both support and opposition from community members. The project aims provide relief to the flood-prone Cypress Creek watershed by transforming the longstanding country club and golf course, located in Champion Forest, into a stormwater detention basin that also serves recreational purposes. "We realize community interest in this matter is very high, and we will be meeting with the [Cypress Forest] PUD and the community to understand what is important," HCFCD Deputy Executive Director Matt Zeve said. "We are certain there is a need for detention in this area, and as we begin developing a design, the potential benefits will become clear."
In addition to the online survey, the district will host a public meeting on the project Tue. March 31 from 6-8 p.m. The meeting will be held in the cafeteria of Klein High School at 16715 Stuebner Airline Road, Spring.
"We encourage residents to go on our website to respond to the survey and submit comments, and attend the upcoming meeting to help to ensure the Flood Control District understands what is important to the community as we work together to provide much needed flood mitigation to the Cypress Creek watershed," Zeve said.
