With 774 of 782 Harris County voting centers reporting, incumbent Sheila Jackson Lee, a Democrat, has won re-election in the race for U.S. House District 18.

Jackson Lee gathered 108,816 votes, or 70.63% of the total, while challengers Carmen Maria Montiel, a Republican; Vince Duncan, an Independent; and Philip S. Kurtz, a Libertarian, received 40,488 votes, 2,717 votes and 2,035 votes, respectively.

As of 10:59 p.m., with 11 out of 782 Harris County polling precincts reporting, incumbent Sheila Jackson Lee, a Democrat, continues to lead the race for the U.S. House of Representatives District 18 spot against challengers Carmen Maria Montiel, a Republican; Vince Duncan, an Independent; and Philip S. Kurtz, a Libertarian.

Jackson Lee has received 74,591 votes, or 72.3% of the total. Montiel, Duncan and Kurtz scored 25,665, 1,727 and 1,188 votes, respectively.

U.S. House of Representatives District 18's Democrat incumbent Sheila Jackson Lee has taken an early lead, early voting results show. Challengers in the election are Carmen Maria Montiel, a Republican; Vince Duncan, an Independent; and Philip S. Kurtz, a Libertarian.


According to early voting numbers, Jackson Lee received 74,355 early and absentee votes, or 72.27% of all votes. Meanwhile, Montiel received 25,612 votes, or 24.9% of the total; Duncan received 1,725 votes, or 1.68% of the total; and Kurtz received 1,187 votes, or 1.15% of the total.

As previously reported by Community Impact, Jackson Lee was first elected to serve District 18 in 1995, and she is currently running for her 15th term. Montiel has a background in TV journalism, according to her campaign website, while Duncan is a Builder, carpenter, designer and Kurtz is a business owner and investor.

U.S. Congress members are elected to two-year terms, and District 18 covers the northern portions of the Greater Houston area, including Spring and Cy-Fair, among others.
