Summit Barber Club celebrated its first anniversary in Sugar Land this summer.
What they offer
The barber shop is made up of independent barbers who bring their own personalities and tables to the studio, according to its website. Summit Barber Club operates with a mission of making each guest's experience unique and personalizing their experience.
The shop—which lets guests choose their barber—charges $50 for a signature cut and design or $40 for just the cut, per its website. It also offers beard services, a hot towel shave and a kids cut.
“The experience is crafted around the individual,” owner Antonio Villegas said. “We believe in quality over quantity, and to us, it’s never just a haircut. It’s about the confidence you carry with you when you walk out the door.”
Meet the owner
Villegas started his journey as a barber in 2014 after he was laid off. Five years later, he moved from North Carolina to Sugar Land, where a friend offered him a barber job. He became known as “Tone the Barber” in Houston, and years later, opened Summit in Sugar Land.
“The name ‘Summit’ represents the idea that there is always another level to reach,” Villegas said. “I believe everyone has a mountain they’re climbing in life. There are challenges, setbacks and failures along the way, but you continue climbing, growing and pushing toward something greater.”
The approach
Villegas said he saw a lot of growth in the past year, but he measures growth through relationships built with customers and the success of its independent barbers.
He said one of those independent barbers, who goes by Dayondabarber, initially paced the floor in fear that customers from his previous location would not follow him to Summit. He spent the year building relationships and trying new marketing techniques. Today, he makes four times the amount of money he made at his previous spot.
“To me, that’s growth,” Villegas said. “Of course I want Summit Barber Club to grow as a business, but I also want it to be a place where barbers can grow their own careers and become successful. If the people around me are climbing too, then I know Summit is moving in the right direction.”
Looking ahead
Villegas said he is focused on continued growth through local events and digital marketing.
