The center will be renamed in honor of U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, 74, who died July 19 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. As a Houston Democrat, Lee led Texas' 18th Congressional District, an area that encompasses portions of the city of Houston, Spring and Humble, as previously reported by Community Impact.
“This facility truly embodies all that the late great Honorable Sheila Jackson Lee stood for,” said Tranita Carroll, Executive Director of Family and Community Engagement, according to the news release. “It is my hope that as we continue to do this important work we always honor her legacy.”
According to the post, the center will also receive upgrades—scheduled to start in 2025 and funded by SISD’s $850 million 2022 bond—including:
- New security cameras and reinforced fencing
- Upgrades to interior office spaces and the exterior pool house and pool facilities
- Parking lot improvements
- New interior flooring and paint
- 17125 Ella Blvd., Houston
