The Spring ISD board of trustees unanimously raised the district's starting teacher salary to $56,500 for the 2020-21 school year while also approving a 2.5% general pay increase for all staff during its June 9 meeting.

As previously reported by Community Impact Newspaper, the board considered three different compensation plans for the 2020-21 school year, each with the goal of staying competitive with neighboring districts. Currently, SISD's starting teacher salary sits at $54,000—the lowest of any of the 16 school districts in the Greater Houston area.

While the most expensive option at a total cost of $9.14 million, the board unanimously approved Option 1 which featured the highest starting teacher salary and the highest general pay increase of the three options.

"This would assist with recruiting, also with retaining our teachers and will help put the district in a more competitive position and close the gap in comparison with many of our surround districts," SISD Chief Financial Officer Ann Westbrooks said during the meeting.

Westbrooks added the pay increase will be supported by the 2020-21 budget, which will be presented to the board at the June 23 public hearing.

Trustee and board Secretary Donald Davis was absent from the June 9 meeting.
