A significantly low amount of voters turned out for Election Day on Nov. 7 in Fort Bend County and were the deciding factors of the several major bond issues on the ballot.

Fort Bend County's $218 mobility bond was approved by voters with 70 percent, or 18,919 residents in favor, of the referendum. Thirty percent, or 8,174 voters, opposed it, according to unofficial voting results.

Voters also approved Lamar Consolidated ISD's $445 million bond with 61 percent of voters, or 4,721 residents, in support of the bond. Katy ISD's bond was also approved by voters.

There are 411,305 registered voters in Fort Bend County, but only 27,769 cast their vote in the election. Fort Bend County Judge Robert Hebert said he was pleased the voters approved the mobility bond, but was disappointed to see the low voter turnout.

"Obviously I am a little disappointed at the low volume of turnout," Hebert said. "Less than 7 percent of the voters took the time to vote and I think it's important that voters realize their vote does count and they should vote in these elections. But other than that I am very happy with the results."
