Several city, county and school board meetings are set for this week, and road repaving begins in downtown Richmond. Stay in the know with these six important news items concerning Richmond and the greater Houston area this week, Jan. 22-26.
1. Richmond City Commission meeting
Richmond commissioners will meet at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22 at the City Hall Annex in downtown Richmond. Items on the agenda include holding a public hearing to replat 0.8 acres of land in Morton Cemetery and deciding on adding additional acreage to the West Fort Bend Management District. The 72 additional acres would help the management district fund a residential development that would be annexed into the city limits.  2. Fort Bend County Commissioners Court
Fort Bend County commissioners will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23 at the historic courthouse in downtown Richmond. Items on the agenda include setting a public hearing on the community development block grant disaster recovery program for infrastructure and housing applications regarding the 2016 Memorial Day and Tax Day floods for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6 at the courthouse; adopting the 2018 investment policy and investment strategy for Fort Bend County; and adopting the budget policy for Fort Bend County fiscal year 2019. 601 Jackson St., Richmond. www.fortbendcountytx.gov
3. LCISD school board meeting rescheduled
Lamar Consolidated ISD’s board of trustees will meet 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23 at the Brazos Crossing Administration building in Rosenberg after cancelling the Jan. 16 meeting due to the winter storm. 4. Asphalt street project to begin Tuesday, Jan. 23 in downtown Richmond
An asphalt milling and overlay project in downtown Richmond will begin Tuesday, Jan. 23 starting at North 10th Street from the Union Pacific railroad tracks to Clay Street, followed by Clay from North Second Street to Collins Road, according to the city of Richmond. Collins from Clay to Waterbury Boulevard at George Park will follow, and then Powell Street from North 10th to Collins will be the third phase of the project. The project was awarded to James Construction at the Nov. 13 city commission meeting, and involves removing the top surface of a street and replacing it with two inches of new asphalt. Residents are advised to limit travel in the project areas as they will have limited access to the streets during the work hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
5. H-E-B to open Wednesday, Jan. 24
The long-awaited H-E-B grocery store off FM 762 in Richmond is set to open this week on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 6 a.m. Construction of the store was delayed after Hurricane Harvey and other delays postponed the opening. The 100,000 square-foot store offers curbside pickup and an expanded collection of items that include produce, dairy, flowers and herbs, Central Market products and H-E-B’s own line of Primo Picks.
6. ICYMI: Houston eliminated from list for Amazon’s second headquarters
Houston was crossed off Amazon’s list for a second headquarters last week, although Austin and Dallas are still in the running to be the new home of Amazon’s 8.1 million-square-foot campus. The online retail giant announced plans in September to make a $5 billion capital investment in a new city for HQ2, creating an estimated 50,000 jobs.
