Broadway Street, Pearland’s most trafficked corridor, will undergo additional aesthetic improvements as the Texas Department of Transportation works on widening and reconstructing the street.

What you need to know

On June 10, Pearland City Council voted to award $333,330 to TBG Partners for landscape architecture design services for aesthetic improvements on Broadway Street between Old Chocolate Bayou Road and McLean Road.

Community Impact previously reported Pearland City Council voted in October to award $333,800 to TBG Partners for the project’s first phase, which included landscape architecture services along Broadway from Hwy. 288 to Old Chocolate Bayou Road.

Construction on the landscaping elements will begin after TxDOT completes the road construction, according to agenda documents.

Offering input

Pearland resident Linda Coons said she was concerned the landscapers would not use enough native plants and suggested the city require between 40%-60% of the plants used be native plants.

“The location should drive the selection of the species that’s planted there,” Coons said.

Council member Rushi Patel said he was concerned about future upkeep and maintenance costs for taxpayers, and agreed native plants would be less expensive.

TBG Partners Principal Blake Coleman confirmed the firm has the capability to use native plants for a large portion of the improvements.

The specifics

Based on TBG Partners’ concept plan, the improvements will include:
  • Landscaping
  • Median and sidewalk enhancements
  • Detention ponds
  • Intersection improvements

The total cost for the improvements between Old Chocolate Bayou Road and McLean Road is estimated to be between $2.5 million and $3 million, according to agenda documents.
