Drivers on McHard Road and Shadow Creek Parkway will be required to adhere to new speed limits after Pearland City Council voted unanimously May 13 to adopt them.

The details

The speed limit on McHard Road between Mykawa Road and Cullen Boulevard will be 45 mph, according to agenda documents. Formerly, the speed limits along that stretch of road were 35 mph between Cullen Boulevard and Stone Road, and 40 mph between Stone Road and Mykawa Road.

The Texas Department of Transportation, which maintains Shadow Creek Parkway, recently conducted a study that found the roadway had higher driveway density and crash rates compared to the statewide average, according to agenda documents. As a result, officials recommended reducing the speed limit.

Based on the study’s findings, council voted to approve the following speed limits for Shadow Creek Parkway:
  • 45 mph from the west city of Pearland limits to the Brazoria County line
  • 40 mph from the Brazoria County line to Country Place Parkway
  • 25 mph between Kirby Drive and Business Center Drive when the school zone speed limit sign is flashing
Formerly, the speed limits along that stretch of road were 50 mph between the west city of Pearland limits and Kirby Road, 45 mph between Kirby Road and SH 288, and 35 mph between SH 288 and Country Place Parkway.

Looking ahead

City staff will immediately replace the speed signs to reflect the change, according to agenda documents. City officials will send the executed ordinance to TxDOT officials, who will replace the speed signs along Shadow Creek Parkway.
