The evening of May 10 was one filled with tears across members of the Alvin ISD board of trustees, not because of a somber occasion, but due to the relationships established by the two outgoing board members.

The AISD board at its May 10 meeting gave Tiffany Wennerstrom, board vice president and outgoing Position 4 trustee, and Nicole Tonini, board secretary and outgoing Position 5 trustee, the floor to say their goodbyes. Additionally, the board introduced Regan Peterson as the new Position 4 trustee and David Selsky for Position 5.

“There’s nothing more I can say for these ladies,” AISD board President Earl Humbird said. “They have given it their all for Alvin ISD.”

Wennerstrom was first elected to the board in 2010. Tonini was first elected to the board in 2013. The pair saw the district undergo various changes during their time. Wennerstrom said she has seen the district grow from its enrollment number of roughly 16,000 students to where it stands today, which is over 28,000 and growing.

Both Wennerstrom and Tonini chose to not run for re-election for their respective positions. Both will be moving away from Alvin, Humbird said.

“What an honor it’s been that the community has put in me and this board. ... It has been a great privilege,” Tonini said.

Peterson and Selsky, the two successors coming into the AISD board, were unopposed in running for their respective positions and therefore did not have to campaign in the May 7 election.

Selsky has served on multiple committees for AISD and has a son in the district, Superintendent Carol Nelson said. Peterson also has ties within the district, including her children, who are enrolled at AISD schools, Nelson added.

Trustee Vivian Scheibel was named the new board vice president and trustee Albert "AJ" Johnson the new board secretary in a unanimous vote by the board.

“Our two new board members are very supportive of the district,” Nelson said.
