At its regular meeting Nov. 10, the Katy City Council unanimously approved a measure to allocate $47,021.51 in funds to repair the roof of the city's fire station.

"The roof has been a chronic problem," said councilman Steve Pierson.

The repairs are expected to take 30 days and will likely begin in two to three weeks, officials said. Work will include the installation of a quarter inch cover board with a membrane that will be stretched across the existing roof, said Fire Chief Rufus Summers.

"There's a section of flat roof that was poorly designed," Summers said. "it's been terrible. We've had so many leaks. A membrane over it will seal it up."

The roof repairs are just the newest in a series of recent improvements for the fire department. In October, the agency purchased a $730,000 fire truck to replace a 1996 pumper and on Nov. 4, residents passed a $5 million bond to improve the city's emergency services. The bond allocated $3.4 million toward the construction of a new fire station on Kingsland Boulevard, $1 million for a new fire truck and $600,000 for a training tower and additional equipment.
