Incumbents Rhonda Faust and Rhonda Newhouse are projected the winners in the races for Positions 4 and 5, respectively, for the Spring ISD board of trustees with 88 percent of precincts reporting.

Faust, the board president, took an early lead over opponent Tammi Humphrey and went on to garner 8,399 votes, or 66.8 percent of the votes, versus Humphrey's 4,171 votes. Meanwhile, in the three-way race for Position 5, Newhouse edged her two opponents with 7,095 votes.

"I appreciate the community's vote of confidence in my representation of their interests over the last three years," said Faust. "I want to assure the community that we are looking at achievement holistically. Superintendent [Rodney] Watson and Team SISD are reviewing and fortifying all aspects of how we do school in Spring ISD with achievement of all students in mind, from our hiring practices, to curriculum and instruction, to the propagation of school spirit on our campuses."

Newhouse, a longtime educator, faced microbiology technologist Monica Charlton and Regina Cochran. Charlton had 3,557 votes while Cochran trailed with 2,354. Newhouse said she was looking forward to working with the district's new superintendent Watson.

"I am a very strict disciplinarian, so I am focusing on better discipline in our district, and I am looking forward to working with our teachers and administration," Newhouse said.

Trustees elected to the board serve rotating three-year terms.

Newhouse has been serving on the board following the resignation of Trustee Mel Smith since July 29. Newhouse brought more than 40 years of education experience to the board, having served as teacher, counselor and campus administrator. Newhouse is field supervisor of principals and counselor certification internship at Prairie View A&M University.

Newhouse said one of her goals as a trustee is teacher retention.

"The turnover in our district has not been good, so we need to focus on offering professional development, working on stronger classroom management and supporting our teachers from our administration on down," she said.

Newhouse said she was passionate about working with students in the district.
