Incumbent Joan Huffman is the projected winner of the Republican candidacy for the State Senate District 17 race by a wide margin with 85.32 percent—or 17,605 votes—with 71 of 347 precincts reporting, according to unofficial results.
"With the primary race behind me, I will continue to address the interim committee charges tasked to the Senate, the needs of my constituents and earn your support for the general election in November," Huffman said. "I look forward to working with all of my colleagues to ensure that we do what is best for every citizen of this state."
Huffman will face off against Democratic candidate Rita Lucido and Libertarian candidate George Hardy in the Nov. 4 election.

Incumbent Joan Huffman is leading by a wide margin with 85.72 percent—or 14,683 votes—of the early and absentee votes over challenger Derek Anthony, according to unofficial results.
Huffman spent nearly 14 years as a prosecutor and six years as an elected judge before being elected to the Texas Senate in 2008. She serves as chairwoman of the Texas Senate Republican Caucus, vice chairwoman of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee, and is also a member of the Finance, State Affairs, and Health and Human Services Committees.
District 17 is comprised of areas in Fort Bend, Brazoria and Harris counties. The term length for State Senators is two or four years with no term limits.
