Longtime Mayde Creek High School principal Obra D. Tompkins Jr. is about to become the namesake for Katy ISD's High School No. 7.
According to the KISD website, the proposal to name the school after Tompkins comes after numerous nominations from area community members. The campus, located at 4400 Falcon Landing Blvd., is scheduled to open in the fall for the 2013-2014 school year.
The Katy ISD School Naming Committee will hold a public forum at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17, in the Katy ISD Board Room, l6301 South Stadium Lane. The public is invited to participate in the forum and provide input regarding the proposed name. Afterward, the committee will review the input and provide its recommendation to the Katy ISD Board of Trustees at its meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 22.
Tompkins served most of his 35 years in Katy ISD as the principal of Mayde Creek High School. He retired in May from his most recent position as executive director for campus administrative support.
In December, the KISD Board of Trustees approved the attendance boundary for the new high school. The boundary will take significant pressure off of Seven Lakes High School and grandfathers juniors and seniors at their current school. The boundary will also draw some students from Katy High School.
