With results in from all but nine of the 8,779 precincts across the state, Dewhurst and Cruz will go to a runoff in the race for U.S. Senate. Vote counts give Dewhurst 44.6 percent, with Cruz earning 34.23 percent.

Paul Sadler and Gary Yarbrough will compete in a runoff election to represent the Democratic party in the race. Sadler leads Democrats with 35.12 percent of the vote with Yarbrough at 25.82 percent.

Voter turnout state-wide has reached 10.68 percent of registered voters in the Republican primary, compared with 3.78 percent in the Democratic primary. Of the 13,065,425 registered voters in the state, 1,395,461 Republicans and 494,914 Democrats have voted.

Runoff elections take place July 31.

Update 11:00 p.m.

U.S. Senate candidates David Dewhurst and Ted Cruz appear poised to head into a runoff as they compete for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Kay Bailey Hutchison.

With 5,855 of 8,779 precincts reporting, Dewhurst leads Cruz with 45.59 percent of the vote to Cruz's 33.09 percent.

The race among Democrats is also heading to a runoff, with a much smaller margin between the four candidates. Sadler leads the pack with 34.56 percent, followed by Yarbrough with 26.22 percent, Allen with 23.1 percent and Hubbard with 16.09 percent.

A total of 1,142,782 Republican votes have been counted state-wide at this point, which is 8.74 percent of registered voters. 3.07 percent of Democrat votes have been tallied, a total of 402,185 votes. Voting totals at this point are all unofficial.

Runoff elections are held July 31.

Update 9:10 p.m.

Dewhurst has a strong lead over Cruz in the race for U.S. Senate with 46.84 percent of the votes to Cruz's 30.15 percent. 1,475 of 8,779 precincts have reported results.

Tom Leppert trails in third among Republicans with 14.43 percent.

Paul Sadler is maintaining his lead over Yarbrough, Allen and Hubbard, but with only 34.36 percent of the votes, a runoff appears likely. Yarbrough has 26.17 percent, Allen has 23.88 percent and Hubbard has 15.56 percent.

Update: 7:50 p.m.

David Dewhurst and Ted Cruz have taken an early lead in the race for the the U.S. Senate seat that is being vacated by Kay Bailey Hutchison.

Dewhurst leads all candidates on the Republican ballot with 46.54 percent of the votes. Cruz follows with 28.92 percent. Tom Leppert has 16.32 percent and Craig James has 3.95 percent. Glenn Addison, Joe Agris, Curt Cleaver, Ben Gambini and Lela Pittenger combine for the remaining 4.27 percent of the votes.

The Democrat side of the race remains tight, with Paul Sadler taking 36.46 percent of the votes. He is followed by Grady Yarbrough with 24.41 percent, Addie Dainell Allen with 23.86 percent and Sean Hubbard with 15.25 percent.
