Two City Council seats are up for election in Tomball this May, as well as two City Council seats and the mayor's position in Magnolia. Both cities started accepting applications Feb. 4 and will continue until the deadline March 5.

The redistricting fiasco that has pushed back primaries and has caused chaos in both statewide and county elections does not have any affect on City Council elections, according to Doris Speer, Tomball City Secretary.

"Our precinct is just our city limits, so we don't have to worry about redistricting," she said. "Regardless of what they end up deciding, our elections will still be May 12."

Early voting beings April 30 and will run through May 8.

The seats up for election in Tomball are Position 2, held by incumbent Mark Stoll, and Position 4, held by Derek Townsend, Sr. Both incumbents have filed for re-election.

So far, two candidates have filed as challengers. Barbara Tague, a Tomball resident who serves on the Tomball Planing and Zoning Commission and as president of the Downtown Tomball Merchants Association, has filed to run against Stoll. Jeffie Cappadonna, who has lived in Tomball for 28 years and serves on Tomball's Tourism Advisory Committee, has filed to run against Townshend.

In Magnolia, Mayor Todd Kana has filed for re-election, as has Mayor Pro Tem Patsy Williams for Position 5. Position 4, held by Burhl Sanders, is also up for election, but at press time, no applications had been filed.

As of now, no candidates have filed to challenge any of Magnolia's incumbents.

Council members in Tomball serve three year, staggered terms. In 2013, Position 3 and the mayor will be up for election. The 2014 elections will be for Positions 1 and 5.

In Magnolia, Positions 4, 5 and the mayor are elected in even numbered years, while Positions 1, 2 and 3 are elected in odd years.

Tomball Council members receive $100 in compensation for each meeting they attend. The mayor also receives a $750 monthly stipend for mileage, attending regional meetings and other events. Magnolia Council members do not receive compensation.
