Montgomery County Precinct 4 Commissioner Matt Gray and members of several east Montgomery County law enforcement agencies unveiled a sign dedicating a section of Hwy. 242 to Sgt. Stacey Baumgartner, who passed away in 2016 in the line of duty.

The details

The dedication was initially approved by Montgomery County Commissioners Court in 2018, but the official sign delivery and installation by the Texas Department of Transportation was delayed until 2024.

“This dedication is long overdue, and my office is proud to have partnered with TxDOT to see it through completion,” Gray said.

Baumgartner passed away in June 2016 due to a collision with another unrelated vehicle following the pursuit of a drunk driver across the intersection of FM 1485 and Hwy. 242. The crash also claimed the life of 11-year-old Adan Hilario Jr., who was in the vehicle that collided with Baumgartner's patrol vehicle, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

In their words

"On behalf of the [Montgomery County District Attorney's] Office, we're glad to be out here today for this dedication on behalf of Officer Baumgartner's life, the service that he gave, the sacrifice that he gave," said Taylor Vanegas, Montgomery County assistant district attorney, during the dedication ceremony. "We're honored to be here with his wife and child. Our hearts go out to the family, the Hilario family; they lost a young boy in this crash as well. So it's important that we remember them in this day and what we're here for as well."
